Australia's Top Casino Leadership Shakeups

In a significant period of change for the nation’s casino industry, several high-profile appointments have been made across Australia’s top casinos. These changes mark a new era of leadership and strategic direction for some of the biggest names in the sector. With these shifts, the industry aims to address current challenges and capitalize on new opportunities in a rapidly evolving market.

Crown Resorts: Fresh Faces in Key Roles

Crown Resorts has announced several pivotal appointments that reflect its commitment to strengthening its leadership team. David Tsai, formerly the CEO of Crown Perth, has been promoted to Group Chief Operating Officer (COO) starting August 1, 2024. Tsai will now report directly to Group CEO Ciarán Carruthers. Brian Pereira, currently the CFO of Crown Perth, will serve as the Interim CEO of Crown Perth, subject to regulatory approval. This transition will ensure continuity and stability within the organization while they seek a permanent replacement.

In addition to Tsai, Crown Resorts has named Gemma Allman as the Group's Chief Government Relations Officer, Nicole Pelchen as the Chief Technology Officer, and Louise Tebbutt as the Chief People and Culture Officer. These roles are crucial as the company navigates regulatory challenges and seeks to enhance its technological capabilities and organizational culture. Stanford Le will take on the role of CEO at Crown Sydney, pending regulatory approval. Pelchen and Tebbutt will begin their roles in August and September, while Le and Allman will start in October.

The recent changes follow the appointment of John Borghetti AO as Chairman of the group on July 1, 2024. Borghetti's experience is expected to bring a fresh perspective to Crown's board. Crown has been under increased scrutiny, including a recent investigation by Victoria's casino regulator into CEO Carruthers. These leadership changes are seen as a strategic move to restore confidence and drive future growth.

The Star Entertainment Group: New Leadership at the Top

The Star Entertainment Group has appointed Steve McCann as its new Group CEO and Managing Director. McCann, who previously led Crown Resorts as CEO in 2021 and served as Group CEO of Lendlease for 13 years, will start his new role after receiving the necessary regulatory approvals from New South Wales and Queensland. McCann's extensive background in corporate leadership and real estate development is expected to bring a new strategic direction to The Star.

The Star's Chairman, Anne Ward, highlighted McCann's extensive leadership experience and his ability to drive transformational change, which will be crucial as the company works on rebuilding trust and achieving sustainable growth. McCann is committed to addressing the complex challenges facing The Star and working collaboratively with stakeholders to drive positive change. His focus will be on enhancing operational efficiencies and implementing robust governance practices.

In May, The Star also appointed Jeannie Mok as Chief Operating Officer (COO). Mok, with over 20 years of senior leadership experience, previously served as Chief Transformation Officer at Crown Resorts. Her appointment is seen as a strategic move to strengthen The Star's leadership team and implement necessary reforms. Mok's expertise in transformation and change management will be vital as The Star aims to modernize its operations and improve customer experiences.

Tabcorp: Gillon McLachlan Takes Charge as CEO

Tabcorp has named former AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan as its new CEO and Managing Director, starting August 5, 2024, pending regulatory approvals. McLachlan brings a wealth of experience from his time at the AFL, where he oversaw significant revenue growth and media rights negotiations. His leadership is expected to bring new insights and strategies to Tabcorp, particularly in navigating the competitive wagering and media landscape.

This appointment follows the resignation of former CEO Adam Rytenskild in March amid allegations of inappropriate workplace behavior. McLachlan's leadership is expected to bring stability and drive growth for Tabcorp, with analysts viewing his appointment positively. His proven track record in managing large organizations and fostering stakeholder relationships will be instrumental in Tabcorp's future success.

A New Era for Australia's Top Casinos

These appointments highlight a period of significant reshuffling within Australia’s casino industry at a time when more and more Australians are playing at real money casinos, both online and offline. With new leadership at Crown Resorts, The Star Entertainment Group, and Tabcorp, the sector is poised for transformation and a renewed focus on governance and operational excellence. These leaders are expected to bring fresh perspectives and strategic initiatives that will drive the industry forward. As these leaders step into their new roles, the industry watches closely to see how these changes will shape the future of Australian casinos.
